About the project

Well-functioning river ecosystems are rare and vulnerable in the boreal region of Sweden. For the project, six river systems with unique character and high natural values have been selected for water restoration. All are negatively impacted by anthropogenic activities (mainly stream clearance for timber floating) but have a potential for considerable enhancement of Natura 2000 habitats and species.

The project will take a holistic and integrated-action approach. Within a catchment perspective, actions will be combined to attain additive effects, e.g. habitat restoration with removal of migratory barriers followed by vulnerable species reintroduction.

The river sections most negatively affected are the high velocity sections (rapids, riffles and runs). The target species are salmon, river pearl mussel, brown trout, otter, small liverwort, noble crayfish and sculpin.

Approximately 140 km of stream sections will be restored, 199 road culverts will be replaced and 22 abandoned dams will be removed during the time period 2021-2026.
